the fabulous foodie tour
House of Travel in Hastings have handed me a dream mission. Plan a trip that includes a river cruise. Spain, Portugal, and a dash of France, The perfect combination.of countries and culture (and food) that I love the most. Tapas. Paella. Flamenco in Seville. Fado in Lisbon. Sailing up the Douro River from Porto with a small group of like-minded people who are in search of an Iberian adventure.
So here's the plan...a fabulous foodie tour!
Leaving from Napier on April 11, 2017 flying Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong for a two day stopover before heading off to Madrid for 3 nights in a nice hotel. We'll explore the delights of this captivating city and take a day trip to Toledo where we'll enjoy one of several gastronomic lunches.
From Madrid it's the fast train to Barcelona for 3 nights, punctuated by a 2 night stay across the border in France at a charming fishing village called Collioure. It's one of the chance discoveries from all my travels that I want to share.
Barcelona will include a visit to the Sagrada Familia - Gaudi's masterwork, and surely one of the wonders of the world. From there we'll fly to Porto in Portugal where we'll join an 8 day river cruise along the spectacular Douro River, stopping on the way at wonderful wineries and charming villages.
Arriving back in Porto we'll travel by train to Lisbon for another 3 night stay that includes a day trip to fairytale Sintra and Cascais and an evening of fado in a family-run restaurant in the historic Alfama.
Last stop is Andalusia - the spectacular city of Seville. A gourmet tapas tour. A visit to the breath-taking Alcazar and off to the Pueblos Blancos of Zahara and Grazalema as well as enchanting Ronda, where Hemingway once walked.
Finally a treat of flamenco and one more amazing meal.
Flying out again from Madrid, we arrive home in Napier on May 6.
Poorer but richer, with wider waistlines and suitcases full of wonderful memories.
This is no frenetic 10 countries in 21 days whizz-stop tour where most of your time is spent on a bus.
The pace will be relaxed. The accommodation quality.. The food amazing.
Plenty of time to savour the magic that is Spain and Portugal.
What's more, the price might surprise you.
